side of scrapple...

with a big plate of chipped beef.
There are certain places in this world that you just enjoy. Not because they are the best. Nor because they offer great service. You go, because they are there. My dad took me to this diner just about every time we were in Center City. He was royalty there. Just like Norm from Cheers... he'd walk in and the whole staff knew his name. Still, Midtown III on 18th Street was what is was... a greasy spoon that served good chipped beef, nice scrapple (do you know what it is?) and awesome coffee.

No matter how old I get, this diner reminds me of dad. Happy Father's day Dad. And Happy Father's day to all the diner going dads out there. Go get yourself a side of scrapple big guy...you deserve it.

the good doctor

the doctor was in...25 years ago!
Dr. J where have you gone? The basketball season is almost over so I thought I'd post a farewell image of the last guy to bring a championship to Philly. The guy who once owned the best afro in sports - Dr J, Julius Erving. There are plans to possibly tear down the Spectrum, (pictured behind Doc). It has been 25 years since we had a championship here. It happened at the Spectrum. 25 years. But the Doc will live on.

Just take a look at this.

what are you...yello?

why yes you are yello!
Yello'bar lives in in G-HO, or Southwest Philly, or Grays Ferry or whatever you want to call that fine neighborhood at Grays Ferry Ave. and Catherine St. No matter what you call it, this neighborhood has a true neighborhood bar...without the attitude. Yello'bar is one of those perfect places where you and a buddy can go get a good beer and chill out any night of the week. A good gastropub with real good people...what else do you need.

Drinking good in the neighborhood, pal.

Stop by tonight and have a pint. While you're there you'll see my when in philly images just a hanging around on the wall throughout the month of June.

meet me at the clothespin

Yep, that is a clothespin alright.
There are not many sculptures as unique as Claes Oldenburg's Clothespin. My earliest memories of visiting Center City as a kid revolve around the 45ft high Clothespin. My father worked in the tower's plaza (Centre Square) that hosts the sculpture for many years. It continues to be "the place" to meet your friends and family in the city. The ultimate landmark...a giant clothespin...yep.

You can find it at 15th and Market Street. And if you look closely, you'll find two people kissing.
